The Coupe version of the W123 was launched in early 1976 with a slightly shorter wheelbase than the saloon. The car soon attracted a new clientele with its elegant lines and pillar less styling giving an aura of freedom and go anywhere anytime appeal to a younger couple of the 1970,s perhaps who were yet to settle down. Initially available with the M115 230 engine and six cylinder M110 engine both in carburettor form they gave way to the 230ce and 280ce respectively, both now fuel injected. Later the north American market got the 300cd with the 3.0 diesel engines and later still a turbocharged diesel.
