The M102 Straight four cylinder petrol engine in 2.3 cylinder guise was arguably the engine to give you the best compromise of power economy and usability. In the W123 This engine was used from its launch in 1980 where it replaced the outgoing M115 unit until the end of the W123 production in 1986.

The 2.3 litre engine used K-Jetronic fuel injection producing 136 bhp and used across the model range Saloon, Estate, Coupe. Hugely reliable was this engine that it was used in various other models of the Mercedes-Benz range until as the M110 it was finally retired after use in the 1989 G Wagen.
